Confederate Flag Museum Display
South Carolina is finally taking down its Confederate Flag, although I loved when the woman climbed the pole and took it down last week. They said it is going into a museum, so I wanted to offer my text for the display.
Here is a symbol of treason, terrorism, white supremacy & oppression waved by people who hated the ideals of our American democracy. The flag initially represented the Confederate Army, which fought to secede from the United States and then was used by racists to signal their hate for African Americans. This flag was in fact raised over the Capitol in 1962 in defiance of the United States government’s efforts to enact civil rights legislation and desegregate the Jim Crow South. Some say that it represented Southern heritage. It does represent the worst of our Southern heritage – a violent, hateful, racist, anti-American heritage that we must forever repudiate.
